Much thanks for your responses. Original question: I am a new member to your list. I will be working with the school librarians starting this fall. I was wondering if any school librarians on the list would give me some information as to what the public library could offer to the school librarian that would be of assistance. I would truly appreciate any information that pertains to use of the WEB in the classroom. I am writing a literature review concerning WEB usage in the classroom and any examples or information concerning that activity would be appreciated. Replies: 1. Larry: I worked a bit with our local young adult librarian. He came over and presented a book talk on graphic novels to all three lunch periods at the high school where I work. As it turned out, several of the top 10 titles in the library ended up being graphic novels. He brought over and pitched the value of a library card and gave a bit of information about what the public library had to offer. One thing I was trying to work on with him was the ability for students to do a remote checkout when he visited the school library of some of the books he brought with him. Currently that is not an option, but it may be in the future. We ran into some logistical issues such as if a HS student had an overdue and checked out something he brought with him, there would be no way to note that. 2. Hi, Larry! I'm an elementary MS here in Tampa, FL. I have a great partnership with our area public library branch. In fact I consider the librarian I work with to be a good friend now. We haven't done anything with the web except for the fact that we have a grant with Capstone books that our students can access. It has been made available to our kids at home & the public library, too. I've shared the info with my librarian friend so she's aware this & can work with the neighborhood children as they come in. Since this is my first year with this school, I hope to do more with the web this coming year, especially linking them to our school website. The best part of our working together, though (other than our new friendship), has been the promotion of programs. She's helped us get some theater & puppet performances in for our students, and some promotions, such as free tickets to see the performance of 'Little House on the Prairie' at our performing arts center & tickets to the circus (along with red clown noses:-). Children could put their names in for a drawing every time they checked out a book. Hope some of this may be useful!
