Good Morning All,
> My district is rolling out broad technology changes this upcoming school year.
> I am in a meeting today with other Early Adopters to discuss issues that may
> need attention. One topic that has already come up is that we need to agree on
> a district wide permission to publish student pictures and videos and so on. If
> you have one of these agreements, could you please send it to me or share it via
> google docs. I am really interested in all possibilities to be covered like:
> for their voice in podcasting, videos (if we post to teachertube or schooltube)
> and photos on class websites and school websites. Do you put a statement on
> your website to parents asking them not to repost another child's (besides their
> own) images to facebook and personal pages? We hope to get something finished
> and ready for use by the end of the day. I do apologize for asking for
> something and needing it so soon. Thanks in advance for your help.

HI Trina,

There are an incredible number of issues I have found that "early adopters" are not
paying effective attention to when they expand the use of technologies -- including
important legal issues. FERPA will apply to any material of students or created by
student online. There are also important copyright issues, free speech issues,
disability access, publishing torts, and the like. I have addressed all of these in
a self-published book entitled Cyber Secure Schools in a Web 2.0 World.

The 3 parts of this book include:
Creating Change in Technology Adoption
Effective Internet Use Management
Web 2.0 in Schools Legal Issues

More information is on my site. BTW, in this book, I make a strong push for school
librarians to play an expanded role as Information Literacy Specialists.

I am a former attorney - and an educational technology enthusiast. What I have
tried to do is to address the possible legal concerns and provide guidance on
addressing those concerns that will also allow for the emergence of 21st Century
learning with interactive technologies. Knowing the mindset of some who are "school
attorneys" I am hoping to get out advance of the potential fear of litigation that
could hold back progress.
