Because of the financial and other situations where I work, I have found
over the past 14 years that I have become more and more isolated from the
educational process at the school. I now have teachers teaching many of the
things our kids need to know, but in 5-15 minute sessions. I have done
several ³lessons² but the teachers found they took ³too long.² A PE teacher
teaches about security, privacy and the Internet in a 15 minutes lesson for
freshman. An English teacher gives a 5 minute overview of Dewey. As I left
library school with many expectations of the future, I am now extremely
frustrated, but today had a victory. We no longer have a summer reading
program because the English department (with good reason) felt they were
taking on a lot more than other departments.

Today I met with them about a optional summer reading program. Those
students who wish to participate will have their choices of books to read
and then to respond on a Facebook Page. They will receive points toward
their quarter averages in English for books successfully read and to which
they will respond. I will facilitate the entire project. They agreed! It
means I will actually show how my abilities can be used!

My inspiration for much of this was a quote that I got somewhere about close
a door and I will make a window, close the window, etc. I will go around you
or above you, etc. I cannot find this quote after a 1/2 hour search. Does
anyone know this quote and would be willing to share the entire quote and
the author?

Thanks for listening and have a great end-of-the-year.
