I love my work most days.  I agree that the politics of it all can make the job
difficult.  I left the profession in the 1970s due to politics and didn't return
for many years.

Why do I love the job?  It's the kids and only the kids.  My work with teachers
is for the kids.

The seniors have left.  Last week one of the boys gave me a hug and said thanks
for the help I gave him on his junior and senior papers.  About six students
around him said "Hey, she helped me, too."  This is my fourth year at the high
school and the numbers are growing.

Once, when I was in the elementary school several years ago,  I was reading
Library 'Lil with voices and expression as we storytellers do.   When I was done
one of the girls said, "Wow, I forgot I was in school."  I have never received a
better complement.

These are the reasons I love my job and my profession.  From the first time my
father brought me to the public library as a child of 6 or 7, I have loved the
library, any library.  We are a most helping profession without much expectation
of reward but the comments from our patrons.  We answer the same questions over
and over with a smile.  Our profession is patient and loving, bright and, mostly,
enthusiastic.  I just hope we can draw in new, younger people to our
profession.

Subject: [LM_NET] TARGET:  We happy few...

The recent discussion about "obsolete libraries" has been positive and remained
professional.  However, there is that underlying negative tone in the discussion.
I'm putting my focus on the positive, and I'm sure many of you do that, too.
These are some tough economic times, even in the BEST of time work in the school
library isn't always easy.  Personally, I've dealt with some real blows in my own
position.  I used to absolutely love my job, but over the past 5 years coming to
work has sometimes made me physically ill.  I've done so much soul searching to
determine why I'm still in this gig.

I do love my work.  I enjoy my work as a librarian.  When I'm with students or
helping teachers to create and deliver meaningful instruction I feel joy and
happiness with my work.  Things that break my heart or make me ill at work have to
do with the politics of education.

How many of us are happy with our work?  Are we only a "happy few?"  I love what
I do and that is why I do it.  Who else loves this work and why do you love it?
