Hi all- Thank you to everyone who sent in suggestions. If anybody has any other suggestions, please continue to send them in. Thank you!!! Lynn Original Target: A 7th grade teacher is looking to create literature circles that mirror the 7th grade social studies curriculum (including countries like China, India, Greece, Italy, and countries in the Middle East). I have been using Novelist and Titlewave's Collection Development tool to gather suggestions for him, but was wondering if you had any suggestions of historical fiction set in these countries that would make for good, insightful reads. Hit: We have a 7th Gr. Lit. class that is reading Chinese Cinderella. We study the same topics in Social Studies. This book comes from our Biography section, but thought it might work. Tasting the sky by barakat not fiction (but reads like it) true story, picked up by ny times reporter and later published as a full diary. Thura's diary my (teenage) life in war time Iraq Theo by barbara harrison Greece WWII greek famine, nazi occupation. May be a bit easy for 7th but really good. The Golden Rat, by Don Wulffson, has been a huge hit with my students. It's set in 13th century China. Teh Chinese exam, The silk train trail, the laughing Sutra, Journey to the west, The royal diaries series has several books feturing characters from several of those countries, A thousand pieces of Gold is an older novle, but still good. Memoirs of a Geisha for the older students (you could work the movie in) the foot binding chair, and The girl-son There is a series by Caroline Lawrence called the Roman Mysteries that are historical fiction. It is very middle grade appropriate. If anybody has any other suggestions, please continue to send them in. Thank you!!!
