I'm always looking for new ideas as well, so I'd love to hear Hi! I'm always looking for new ideas as well, so I'd love to hear what you've compiled. We're going to try book trailers next year and push those, but we also do the following currently: * booktalks where I hand students a bookmark sized paper with the cover illustration and the title with a bullet that looks like a check box so they can mark any I talk about as potential choices * displays such as the attached--pulling in realia really helps * posters with 5-6 book covers on them based on a them such as Historical fiction where I set up a corner and feature these titles. I like doing 6-7 of these displays all around the library during Teen Read Week Hopefully some of these ideas will help! Good morning! With budgets going the way they are I am pretty sure that I will not have very much money - if any - for new books next year. I have been very lucky the last 4 years to have enough money that I have been able to pretty much rebuild our fiction section. (Which was in really bad shape when I started 4 years ago.) I feel good about my fiction collection but for next year I am looking for ways to promote it through book displays. Ways to keep reading exciting and fun so the kids will keep reading even when I cannot buy many new books. I have more and more students reading and checking out each year and don't want to lose that momentum next school year. My library is fairly small and of course money is not in the picture. I would like to start putting this together now and through the summer so I can come in excited next year when school starts and to get the kids excited too. Any ideas that you guys have would be greatly appreciated. We are a small rural, conservative school so some things would probably not work as well here. Thank you for your help! I was going to wait until Sunday = but there have been some developments that I can=92t wait to share, so it=92s g= oing out earlier than planned. (Please note that I will begin putting a copy of these updates in a subfolder of the =93Documents=94 folder called =93Weekly Updates=94.) As of today, we have 64 book trailers available for download. There have been three new trailers posted since Sunday. I am anxiously awaiting a trailer for a Patricia Polacco book and one for *The Diary of a Wimpy Kid*. (They=92re supposed to be finished today) The three new ones are: =B7 *Donut Days*, by Lara Zielin created by June Henson of Flower Mound, Tx (MG+) =B7 *Battle of the Labyrinth*, by Rick Riordan created by Josh, 5thGrader from Pettus, Tx (MG) =B7 *Ricky Ricotta=92s Mighty Robot and the Voodoo Vultures from Ven= us*, by Dav Pilkey created by Jesus, 5th Grader from Pettus, Texas (LG) There has been a BTFA page created on Facebook. If you are on FB, feel fre= e to go and become a fan of the page. Each time a new trailer is uploaded, i= t will be posted to the FB page. The URL for that is: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Book-Trailers-for-All/334149457794?ref=3Dsgm = You must become a fan to automatically see the updates on your wall. There will also be an update added to Twitter each time a new trailer is uploaded. Feel free to follow me to get those updates: http://twitter.com/texasbookbabe There has been a =93New Trailers=94 spreadsheet added to the =93Documents= =94 folder. Each time a new trailer is added, this sheet will be updated and the file date will be changed. It will be erased and started over each week. There has been a new column added to the =93Details=94 spreadsheet, noting the nu= mber of times each trailer has been downloaded. This will be updated once a wee= k and sent out with the Update email. We have had great feedback regarding the fact that the trailers are available on both sites (Teacher Tube and 4shared) Because of this, we are going to continue asking people to upload their trailers to the group on TT= . Thankfully, the upload process is the easiest thing about the site, and onc= e you=92ve done it once, it=92s a piece of cake. If you add a trailer, and y= ou have not added one before, please send an email with your name, school name= , and location along with the URL for your webpage of blog, if you have one, to: booktrailers4all@gmail.com Once the trailer is available in the TT group, we will make sure it is added to the BTFA page at 4shared. Remember, if you have trouble uploading to Teacher Tube, don=92t hesitate t= o ask for assistance. Just shoot me an email and I=92ll do it for you. I=92v= e done it for several people already and it=92s not a problem for me in the least. I think that=92s it for this week. For more frequent updates, please either follow us on Twitter or Facebook. When their TV breaks one night, they find out how much fun they can have without television. Library Lil by Suzanne Williams - She gets the townspeople to turn off thei= r TVs and read. No More Television by Philippe Dupasquier Fix it by David McPhail When Charlie McButton Lost Power by Suzanne Collins - will be absolutely perfect, and it's funny, too! Penny Lee and her TV by G. The Wretched Stone by Chris Van Allsburg Kamishibai Man by Allen Say Nothing to Do by Douglas Wood Chapter Books The TV Kid by Betsy Byers - effects of living too much in a TV world The Library Card by Jerry Spinelli - is a collection of short stories. They cant use a cell phone because there is no signal. My student's parents have trouble affording groceries most months; they are not buying their student a Kindle. Many of my students only have access to books because my school library exists. I use and teach technology with my students so they are as prepared as they can be if they choose to leave the reservation and going to college. However, I don't spend much of my limited collection money on electronic resources. My students cant use them from home, they can use a book at home. Heck with all the snow and mud this year I have students that could not get to school for 10+ days because their roads were to muddy to drive on. Thankfully they had library books at home to read. The public library in the community of Gallup (the nearest town) is busier than it has ever been with people checking out books and materials. It is PACKED most days. People are lined up at the check out counter. I just think it is important to remember when we are talking about the end of books, we need to remember that there is a BIG technology gap between the haves and the have nots in this country. They don't seem to favor continuing to support the Gutenberg era or "brick & mortar" or traditional libraries. For instance, if libraries (administrator driven?) are turning into computer labs, digital books projected costing 1/3rd of print version, school architects are reducing library square footage, patrons accessing traditional library resources including the card catalog without going to the library, your library averages X number of patrons per day and 75% never touch a book, and the younger generation preferring to read/use digital instead of books, what do all this portend? Also, there are the what ifs. What if many jobs do not return-- average unemployment stays at 7-8% or, like Europe, is considered FULL employment? Housing values remain stagnant for next 5010 years thus state tax revenues continue to decline? If school librarians have to cut, will it be easier or more difficult to defend to administrators cutting an online resource instead of books? Because of personnel cuts, librarians have less time to review and process books? What if 99% of books are also ebooked or the next YA bestseller is published first as an ebook and only six months later as a hardback or paperback? Kindles, ereaders are $50? In response to the trends, over the years I've expanded my online/ digital resources to about half my budget (15-20 subscription databases compared to 1,200 new books), created a a virtual library of websites/resources, weekly bulk email staff/students reviews, bibliographies, and research suggestions, student book reviews in school paper, and usual displays, inservice and orientation of library resources. I've tried to encourage staff to require a certain percent of "print" citations when doing research (3 out of 6 sources?).
