One of my favorites to read in elementary school was Aunt Pitty Patty's
Piggy by Aylesworth. I used to call out the part and point to a student to
stand up then every time that character was named, they were to stand. I
never gave oral directions, they all got it quickly or I waited for them to
figure it out. I would just point at someone and then make a hand motion to
sit down. I did it with other books too and sometimes had them all come and
line up in front. I also kept a basket of animal beanie babies. When I read
books with animals, I would toss the toys to students to stand up and hold
when that animal was mentioned. They are VERY quiet and well behaved that
way, hoping to hold a toy. And then there's There Was an Old Woman Who
Swallowed a Fly (or a pie or whichever version you have)....I miss
elementary school sometimes!

And if you have a television or data projector, the version of Chicka Chicka
Boom Boom on Discovery Streaming is addictive. Big reward for the kids and
dancing in their seats, or on occasion, all over the library.
