The question is why? It would take me those 5 to 8 minutes to check out the kids, so how much time would they have to select. An important part of my curriculum is teaching kids how to self-select. Asking the questions, what am I interested in? What was the last book I loved that I want one like it? How do I find one like it? How can I tell what a just right book is? It takes time to look up a book on the computer by author. It takes time to search by subject. Write down a call number. Go to the shelves. Not find the book they were looking for...ask for help. Not find the book they were looking for but by serendipity finding the perfect shark book nearby. Getting recommendations from friends. Browsing takes time. Even when we are only doing book exchange with the lower grades,(I preselect high interest , age appropriate books for the class and fill a cart, not their library time) we give the kids a full half hour to browse and select their choices. Can you give me pointers on the best way to do it?
