I am a fence-sitter, but it's just that I agree with everything (almost) that most netters have said about literacy and check-out. However, I feel responsibility to the tax-payers--community and parents--to make strong efforts to get back items (their investment). If a library gets $10,000.00 in books per year and loses $2,000.00--pretty soon you'll be out of business. Any small business would not recover. We promote the local branch of the public library--they offer great teen programs--my school is grades 6-8. If the kids want books, they have to make the effort to go there. I think Betci's book swap idea is a great and workable solution. It's late to think about it this year--we're out in one week, but for next year--I may do the swap. It's important to realize that we are all in the same business, but our situations are sometimes REALLY different. Pamela Thompson, MLIS Library Media Specialist Col. John O.
