I have also adopted similar solution. We have a firm return date one week before
school gets out. I then work 3 hours one morning a week. I don't get paid for
these hours but I do get them back in comp time per an agreement worked out with my
principal. This serves two purposes. One, I can get some of my end of year tasks
done that I don't get done before the official last day and also get set up before
teacher arrive in the fall. Two, our public library has a dreadful young adult
(only about 1/2 a bookcase) and I have some avid readers. By keeping it open it
allows them to keep reading. We also assign summer reading for honors classes
along with a project so they can use the computers and check out summer reading
books. This worked very well last year.

Hi all-

I can see both sides of the argument about book checkout and the end of the year,
and I am one of those that sets a late final checkout date and then continues to
check out books past that date for students who need or want books.

One of my solutions to this issue was to create a mini-summer library program (the
public library helps promote my program, and I help promote their summer program as
well). I open my library for about 4 hours most Tuesdays throughout the summer. I
am fortunate to be able to be part of our district's summer schools offerings, so I
do get paid for running this program. In this way I can continue checking out
books during the summer and offer up some technology lessons, meet parents and
siblings, reconnect with HS students who come back to get books, and more. It has
been a definite positive for my whole program; the number of student visits more
than doubled in the program's second year.

I know this is not a solution for every library and librarian/library media
specialist, but it has worked for me and, more importantly, for my students. If
you have any interest in beginning a program at your school, I suggest talking with
the coordinator of summer school in your district; some states help pay the costs
of summer programs so schools are happy to amp up their summer school offerings.

Wishing everybody a great end of the year-

Lynn
