Hi Great Brain,

A patron asked today about a picture book mentioned in Reliable Wife by Robert
Goolrick. It's a children's picture book where the character is walking through a
garden. This fantasy-like garden changes from browns of winter to greens of spring
as the character is walking along. Does anyone know the title of the children's
book that Mr. Goolrick is referring to?

Thanks,
Barb

RE: New Edition of Information Power:

Thanks those who responded! It seems that ALA is transitioning to Standards for
the 21st Century Learner AND Empowering Learners: Guidelines for School Library
Media Programs in place of Information Power. The ALA website says they
"complement" one another. It seems you need both. Upon doing a little further
research, I found a third book, Standards for the 21st Century Learner in Action
which gives examples in grade levels.

Standards for the 21st Century Learner (June 30, 2007):
http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/aasl/guidelinesandstandards/learningstandards/standards.cfm
(full-size 8 page pamphlet version available online)

Empowering Learners: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs (June 23, 2009):
http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/aasl/guidelinesandstandards/learningstandards/guidelines.cfm

Standards for the 21st-Century Learner in Action (December 30, 2008): :
http://www.ala.org/ala/mgrps/divs/aasl/guidelinesandstandards/learningstandards/standardsinaction.cfm

Please also consider checking our the Learner for Life program

I must have missed the big fanfare!

Not much on the request for new professional books-but here are the two I got...

New (ish) Library Professional Resources

The principal's guide to a powerful library media program /|cMarla W. McGhee and
Barbara A. Jansen. Worthington, Ohio :|bLinworth Books,|cc2005.

Offers school principals practical advice and strategies to help them develop an
effective library media program, with an overview of the best library media
practices and strategies for dealing with challenges.

Nicholas Carr, author of the widely popular Atlantic article, "Is Google Making us
Stupid," has a new book out called "The Shallows: What the Internet is doing to
our brains."

It's available on Amazon with a healthy pre-pub discount.

This could be a good starting point for discussion on your campus.
