LM_NET Archive

David:

I had seen my information on Spokeo a few months ago and after being shocked to see
the type of information I had to laugh as over half the information was wrong.
There is a place on the website where you can request that you be removed and it
works as I am no longer there. Just click on the privacy link at the bootom of the
home page. I found out about the LM_NET accessibility a few years ago when Rules
won the Newberry. I had posted on LM_NET a "what if" question regarding the book
which someone took the wrong way (I owned the book at the time) and took it upon
themselves to update our school's article on Wikipedia to reflect that I banned
books in our library. Everyone who knows me knows that I have served on a number
of Intellectual Freedom boards and committees, do a two-week long unit in my school
on banned books. and have served on a public library board which had a huge
censorship case come before them. Luckily (no pun intended) we found out about it
and quickly reedited the article. It did have a plus as I can now give personal
testimony to our kids on how incorrect/possibly damaging information can be put out
on Wikipedia (and the web in general). We also talk about the effect it may have
on someone or a company's reputation if it isn't discovered in time.

This site takes public information from many sources and collates it. I
checked it a few months ago and found myself. I don't remember whether I
requested to be deleted or not, but I'm not there anymore. Just for fun,
I typed in my dad's name, and only one hit came up. I know it isn't my
dad, because he died in 1999.

For the really scary privacy stuff, try Google. Every post on LM_NET is
there, complete with full name, school, edress, phone number, the works.
