In the Mac world, we have found that using magic tape across the housing to the ball slows them down enough that you notice something is happening before they get the ball out. Remember that "bone" in the mending kit? It has a new use -- blending the tape into the plastic, making it tough to realize its there unless you are trying to get the ball out.
