We had two TV's going on different channels and a request from the principal to tape as much as possible. Kids came in during the day and just asked if it was ok if they just sat and watched. Some teachers had the TV's on all day in their rooms and some said they watched for awhile and then went back to teaching but, as one put it, it just didn't seem important to learn numbers in Spanish with all that going on. We are a 9-12 building and it was interesting to see student's reactions-- some tears, lots of questions, some fear and quite a number who just didn't seem to think that this was anything to make such a big deal out of. (Are we becoming immune to this kind of carnage, don't they have any sympathy for others or did they truely just not "get it"?) All afterschool activities were canceled including football practice - which never happens. At my grandson's elementary school in another district they opted for the "its up to parents to tell you approach"-- however they did tell the kids that something terribly bad had happened and that they were to go home and ask their parents to tell them about it. Of course by the time Kevin got home he was terrified that something had happened to one of his parents-- he lives with his Mom and called to find out if my daugher and his dad were hurt. Can you imagine what this was like for a child who came home to an empty house? What a scary trip home this must have been. As horrible as this seems to those of us removed from a personal connection, I can't imagine what it must be like for those who have friends and family in the horror. You are in my heart and in my prayers. God Bless You and us and America.
