I'm one of those who uses quotation marks in a way that might be considered
as emphasis, but what I really intend is for the reader to understand that
the word in quotes doesn't actually mean what it usually does.  When
speaking, the tone of voice can indicate that, but with print, as you all
know, that vocal inflection gets lost.  By noting the word as unusual, I
hope the reader knows that it was intentional instead of just another
grammar error.  If readers are taking it as emphasis, perhaps I should find
another way to distinguish my vocal inflections.
