Many of the problems with closing at the end of the year from inventory show
the administrative view of the library as a place for students to go while
teachers have a break or prep period instead of an essential part of a
school program. Even though our state department suggests open scheduling
we get no support from our media coordinators so all of the elementary
libraries are still essentially teacher breaks. Also, inventory closings
are left up to the individual principals -- one middle school allows the
librarian to close a month early while my principal even balks at two weeks.
After all, the teachers must have their breaks no matter what (even though
they get PE every day and art and music twice a week).

Hopefully something will come down from the central office before then. If
not, I have decided to use the figures from last year to calculate book
number rather than try to scan the entire library at the last minute. As
far as scheduling, we are due for a SACS visit in May and guess which
recommendation was not followed five years ago -- the recommendation for an
open library schedule. My principal said he was included then only because
I asked for it, not because the committee saw the need for it. And everyone
wants to know why librarians are frustrated?
