Hi Michelle, An authentic assessment in literacy instruction should be embedded into the curriculum, not sit outside it, otherwise it isn't authentic. :) BC Vice President, Advocacy & Promotion, IASL: www.iasl-online.org The GiggleIT Project: www.iasl-online.org/sla/giggleIT/index.htm LIS@ECU: www.chs.ecu.edu.au/portals/LIS/index.php Australian School Library Research Project: www.chs.ecu.edu.au/portals/ASLRP/ Barbara Combes, Lecturer School of Computer and Security Science Edith Cowan University, Perth Western Australia Ph: (08) 9370 6072 Email: b.combes@ecu.edu.au "Whatever the cost of our libraries, the price is cheap compared to that of an ignorant nation." One of my literacy teachers is looking for authentic assessments in literacy instruction. She knows different strategies to teach our students but she would like other activities to help show students how to use those strategies to cross over in other classes, not just language arts. Since she is not teaching content (like history) she is trying to show students when/where they will need these strategies. She gave the example of reading out loud. Most people don't read out loud unless to a younger student (which they do). I suggested during presentations they are reading out loud from notes or from memorization. I hope this all makes sense. We are a school with 1st-12th grades any level is welcome. I'll post a hit. Thanks in advance!
