Dear Mary Jo, I am not quite sure how my name popped up as being responsible for this new title. As a matter of fact, I responded by saying although I liked the new title that I didn't feel it adequately described what we do. I don't think there is any disagreement among all of us about the evolution of our job and how many facets have been added. The real issure, I think, is change. Our reactions to the title are insignificant compared to what is really happening. What I see, hear and read is that Generally, the school population has no understanding of what we do. Our job continues to encompass more than the standard opinion, keeper of the books (and keeper is what some of us have done). Libraries or media centers are not utilized by students and teachers as extensively as they could or should be. Technology has dramatically changed all our lives including the library. Even some of the skills we teach are obsolete. Some people think the librarian is expendable and the library will not exist as we know it today. And I am sure this list could be added to. No wonder, we discuss our title. Louise Edwards Elementary Librarian Mount Vernon, WA ledwards@eagle.esd189.wednet.edu
