When my father was young, before World War II, he went for a year to Stockholm, to the university. Instead of using a card catalog, researchers were to talk to the librarians, each of whom was a subject specialist. These librarians would direct the young researchers to the key texts in any field. I don't think our role has changed. We still are the specialists who direct patrons to the material that they need. That the sources are now so often electronic does not change that for me. The point is that the librarian's expertise is at the service of the reader, both before the reader arrives (selection, etc.) and after the reader asks for help.
