Lorraine,
Your student should read some of the early fiction of Harlan
Ellison, such as his 1958 novel, Rumble [vt Web of the City 1975] that
was based upon Ellison's assumption of a false identity and participation
in a gang called the Barons from Red Hook, Brooklyn. Ellison ran with
this gang for ten weeks and used his experiences in Rumble and other
novels, such as The Deadly Streets [1958.]
