Well - here's a preview on tomorrow morning news Canada's David Olesen was first into Cripple this morning earning him $$3,000 and a silver trophy. The annual award is made to the first musher to reach the half-way point in the 1,100 mile race between Anchorage and Nome. [YES, the race is half over - at least for the front runners. You all have to decide if you want "coverage" of the Iditarod to continue after the race has been won - or if we are stopping there!!] Olesen checking into Cripple, a former gold mining town, at 9:50 a.m. with a team of 13 dogs. Olesen has yet to declare his 24 hour layover. Running behind Olesen was Jdefen ding champ Jeff King of Denali Park. King pulled out of Ophir at 7:30 a.m. heading for Cripple with 16 dogs. Right behind king are Dee Dee Jonrowe, Rick Swenson, Tim Osmar, all of whom pull ed out of Ophir within 32 minutes of King. Rick Mackey followed Osmar 12 minutes later at 8:14 a.m. running 6th. Montana rancher Doug Swingley (sorry I've been spelling it wrong), Martin Buser, Charlie Boulding and Bill Cotter rounded out the top 10. Susan Butcher was running in 20th. In addition to the 24 hours stop mushers are required to rest their teams at least eight hours in one of the four checkpoints along the Yukon River AND at the White Mountain checkpoint, 77 miles from the finish. Only one musher has scrached so far. Rick Townsend pulled out of the Rainy Pass . Sorry for the mess - it's the computer. Cheers.
