LM_Netters: I received this message via the counselor's net before I subscribed to LM_NET and don't know if this information has been on this one. The amendment certainly has implications for libraries and I haven't heard one thing else about it. Does anyone out there know of it's fate? We had a similar effort in the state legislature last session that didn't make it.....yet. Rep Mel Hancock (R-MO) will offer an amendment to this bill that would prohibit services for gay, lesbian, and bisexual youth. The amendment reads: "Sec.9508. Prohibition Against Funds for Homosexual Support. (a) Prohibition--No local educational agency that received funds under this Act shall implement or carry out a program or activity that has either the purpose or effect of encouraging or supporting homosexuality as a positive lifestyle alternative. (b) Definition--A program or activity, for the purposes of this section, includes the distribution of instructional materials, instruction, counseling, or other services on school grounds, or referral of a pupil to an organization that affirms a homosexual lifestyle." Such an amendment would interfere with our obligation to provide services to our students. Please call the House of Representatives switchboard at 202-225-3121 and ask your representative to oppose the Hancock Amendment to H.R. 6. Thank you. Arleen C.
