  May 24 Early Childhood Teleconference

Concetta C. Sullivan, New York State Education Department
Assistant Commissioner for Child, Family, and Community
Development, has extended an invitation to New Yorkers to
participate in a May 24 interactive teleconference. She also
has announced 32 teleconference downlink sites.

This is an opportunity for children's services librarians,
school library media specialists, and other librarians to
interact with others concerned with early childhood. The
subject of this conference ties directly to _GOALS 2000_, _A New
Compact for Learning_, and White House Conference concerns for
library services that help every child enter school ready to
  learn.

                         4:00-6:00 p.m. EST

What makes an early childhood program effective? How can parents
and practitioners work together to create a nurturing
environment? these and other important questions about early
childhood education will be discussed in an exciting statewide
teleconference. This live interactive video teleconference is
sponsored by the New York State Education Department in
  cooperation with Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES, Oneida-
Herkimer-Madison BOCES, Madison-Oneida BOCES, SUNY Institute of
Technology at Utica/Rome, and the New York State Satellite
  Distance Learning Network.

This statewide teleconference will provide an opportunity for
parents, practitioners, and community members across the State
to examine essential elements of effective early childhood
practices and to participate in local discussions about early
childhood issues at approximately 32 downlink sites. It will
also provide an interactive question-and-answer period with a
panel of persons knowledgeable about early childhood education.

The panelists include Dr. Mary Beth Bruder, Director of Child
and Family Studies, University of Connecticut School of
Medicine; Concetta C. Sullivan, Assistant Commissioner, Child,
Family and Community Development; Carol Mulligan and Donna M.
Elefante, practitioners; and Carlos Vidal, a parent involved in
early childhood education. They will discuss developmentally
appropriate programs, components of a nurturing environment,
strategies to promote continuity, providing comprehensive
services, increasing parental involvement, staff development and
  effective leadership.

Teleconference downlink sites across the State are listed below.
If you are interested in attending the teleconference, please
register by contacting the downlink site at the telephone number
provided. For further information on the video, please call 800-
765-4773. Other sites may become available.

We are excited about this unique opportunity to discuss early
childhood education and look forward to your participation.
