Sullivan, New York State Education Department Assistant Commissioner for Child, Family, and Community Development, has extended an invitation to New Yorkers to participate in a May 24 interactive teleconference. She also has announced 32 teleconference downlink sites. This is an opportunity for children's services librarians, school library media specialists, and other librarians to interact with others concerned with early childhood. The subject of this conference ties directly to _GOALS 2000_, _A New Compact for Learning_, and White House Conference concerns for library services that help every child enter school ready to learn. How can parents and practitioners work together to create a nurturing environment? these and other important questions about early childhood education will be discussed in an exciting statewide teleconference. This live interactive video teleconference is sponsored by the New York State Education Department in cooperation with Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES, Oneida- Herkimer-Madison BOCES, Madison-Oneida BOCES, SUNY Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome, and the New York State Satellite Distance Learning Network. This statewide teleconference will provide an opportunity for parents, practitioners, and community members across the State to examine essential elements of effective early childhood practices and to participate in local discussions about early childhood issues at approximately 32 downlink sites. It will also provide an interactive question-and-answer period with a panel of persons knowledgeable about early childhood education. The panelists include Dr. Mary Beth Bruder, Director of Child and Family Studies, University of Connecticut School of Medicine; Concetta C. Sullivan, Assistant Commissioner, Child, Family and Community Development; Carol Mulligan and Donna M. Elefante, practitioners; and Carlos Vidal, a parent involved in early childhood education. They will discuss developmentally appropriate programs, components of a nurturing environment, strategies to promote continuity, providing comprehensive services, increasing parental involvement, staff development and effective leadership.
