Denice Adkins - University of Arizona - School of Library Science adkinsdc@ccit.arizona.edu adkinsdc@arizvms.bitnet *********** ARROZ CON LECHE ANNUAL LITERATURE CONTEST 1994 CHILDREN'S LITERATURE CONTEST Dr. Arnulfo D. Trejo, president of Hispanic Books Distributors, Inc., has announced the 1994 "Arroz con Leche" chidren's literature contest. The winner will receive a $1,000 award for the best manuscript submitted for a children's book (K-4). "The beauty of the contest is that Hispanic writers from across the country are acquainting young readers with the values, culture, and traditions that are singular to Latinos in the United States," said Dr. Trejo. The guidelines for writers wishing to enter this contest are briefly stated below. Writers who wish to enter the contest should write for the complete guidelines. 1. Authors must be of Afro/Indo/Iberian Latino heritage, born, raised, or permanent residents in the United States (including Puerto Rico). They must be 18 years old or older. 2. Authors must submit a short biographical paragraph that verifies the ethnicity of the writer. 3. Manuscripts must be for unpublished works of fiction, K-4. 4. Manuscripts must be of approximately 800 words in length, and should be typed double-spaced. 5. Manuscripts should be written in the language that best reflects the cultural influence of the story - Spanish, English, or both. THE CONTEST DEADLINE WILL BE WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1994. No submissions will be entered in the 1994 contest after this date. No illustrations are required; they will be the responsibility of the publisher. A panel of judges will evaluate the manuscripts. HBD will reserve publishing rights. Five percent of the revenues derived from the sale of the award winning book will be donated to the Trejo Foster Foundation for Hispanic Library Education.
