In my workshops this Fall, I have been championing teaching kids to cite in context (using APA parenthesis style) for every answer to every assignment - starting in first grade. Vocabulary words, social studies homework, math, reports - all these can be cited. The students can cite themselves, their parents, friends, etc. in addition to textbooks and various print/electronic sources. We want them to cite to: - be able to evaluate the effectiveness of soures (did they get it right?) - give proper credit - allow us to evaluate synthesis (integration of information from sources) - allow readers to get back to the original if desired. If we start early, we won't have as much of a problem in later years. Also, with more and more electronics - images, video, etc. - I suggest again including a cite - "This image is based on ...." as an included note. I urge all of us to begin working with students and teachers in doing this.
