I have asked that very question to various IBM technical support people and
have received various responses.  The latest being to only shut down for long
vacation periods. (More than 3-4 days or when there is a chance of a severe
thunderstorm).  For some five years I had been shutting ours down daily with
no ill effects.  I did that because it was located in an exposed area.  Now
our new server is in a secure area and I do shut down most weekends, unless I
know for sure someone is coming in over the weekend to use the network.  I
find it pretty hard to believe that shutting down for the weekend can do any
harm, providing you do shut down following the proper shutdown procedures.
