I am in desperate need of some documentation from a Catholic source that supports the ALA policies of materials selection, censorship, intellectual freedom, freedom to read etc. Does anyone have anything that you can email to me or fax (404)985-5526? We have a group of parents on a mission to censor "contraversial" materials especially in the area of sex. Yes, we have a selection policy and a challenged material procedure, but this group has gone directly to the Archbishop who for right now has sided with them. We will be having a meeting with him on 8/29 to discuss this issue which is why I need the documentation. I have searched the Net and so far have found nothing. Three books have been banned from the required reading list. These include The Haj by Leon Uris, Fade, by Robert Cormier, and The Great Santini by Pat Conroy. The next one under attack is Song of Solomon (a Nobel Prize winner). Does anyone have contacts with the Catholic Library Association? Where do you draw the line when it comes to selection in your library? I'm interested in both sides of the issue. Thanks!
