It is read as a class set in American Literature which is junior year.
Some of our novel reading is being handed over to history teachers, even
though the English teacher gives the literary background.  Example, the
English teacher teaches about John Steinbeck and the literary era, while the
history teacher teaches about the Great Depression. Students read _The
Grapes of Wrath_ at that time. I'm not sure the teaching of the Scarlet
Letter occurs the same way.
