The Doomsday Clock is a device for conveying how close we are to
annihalation from nuclear war. I can't remember its origins - whether it
was created after 1945 or later - but the idea is that with every increase
in tension between the Superpowers the clock moves on a second or so
towards the ultimate Doom of midnight. A very effective analogy, I think.
Decrease in tension or the likelihood of nuclear catastrophe moves the
second hand back (effective but a fault in the analogy!)
