You know, this is where I come in.  Please encourage your teacher to look at
different translations of the Bible.  There are several excellent ones
coming out at this time:  The New Revised Standard Bible is a translation
which uses nonsexist language very successfully; The NIV is great; The New
Jerusalem Bible is quite good poetically, especially with portions of the
Old Testament and the Psalter; The New Revised King James Version is out
from the American Bible Society (New Testaments can be purchased for only 75
cents each!); and, of course, there is the old standby: The Good News Bible.
Hope this helps.  Please don't look for a story book type collection in the
upper grades; most publishers expect people to be using the full Bible at
that point.
