Overdues - Responses

It seems that we all have similar problems and similar "solutions".  I'm
sending this THANK YOU to all who answered my querry abou the problems with
overdues, and offered suggestions.  Here is a compilation of some of the
answers.

The following is a list of answers I received to my querry
about "what to do about overdues." * - Means several people
had the same idea.

1. * Overdue notices - monthly, weekly, daily.  Daily, kids
   get tired of being sent to the library to clear it up, so
   they take care of it.
2. * No more books.
3. Call parents
4. * Send list every week to English teacher or other.
5. Change check out to one week - must bring back book for
   renewal. Two weeks leave more time to forget.
6. Make fine .25 a day.  Work in library (at .25 a day) to
   pay if student can't afford the money.
7. One day at end of year - Cookie Day in English classes, if
   no one in class has an overdue book.  Large cookies baked
   by librarian are a big hit. (I case you're wondering, this
   came from a high school librarian.)
8. Hold student registration for last.
9. Withhold yearbook
10. Free Day - Get free things as reward for returning book.
11. * Withhold extracurricular activities (dances, football
    games, etc.)
12. Publish names in a school newsletter.
13. Publish names of students without overdues in Thank You
    letter. Use reverse psychology - Positive reinforcement.
14. Ask teachers for help.
15. Seniors - No tickets for graduation, No diplomas.
16. No Study Hall privileges
17. Afterschool detention.
18. List book as "missing" and send cost to student.
19. Public Lbrary turned over names to collection agency.
