A social studies teacher came to the library this week and requested to see a reference used by a student in a report on Martin Van Buren. In the report, the student had written, "In a very personal note, Van Buren was known to have slept with his son's wife while in the White House." The cited paragraph, from Facts About the Presidents, read "Hannah Van Buren died about nineteen years before Martin Van Buren became President. The mistress of the Whitehouse during his administration was Angelica Van Buren, wife of Abraham Van Buren, President Van Buren's son and private secretary." Is this the way rumors get started?
