Hello Again, LM_NETTERS,
I have a request for some information: My K - 5 elementary school
is going to focus on further developing the use of portfolios in our school.
A couple of questions have come up.

First, from the LMC: I use a type of portfolio with my third,
fourth, and fifth graders for both management purposes and to aid with their
assessment. (I grade twice a year) Each student's portfolio includes their
work as well as self-evaluation. I am looking for ways other library media
specialists use portfolios with students in grades K through 5.

Second, from the Music teacher: She works in two buildings,
teaching about 30 classes per week, and also grades twice a year. She is
concerned about giving up precious instructional time to the management of
portfolios. In other words, she would rather have the kids singing,
playing, etc. than writing. She is also concerned that if she begins making
recordings (video/sound) of student performance, what will the rest of the
class do while one student is recorded?

Any help would be appreciated. If possible, in your reply, please
include things like: number of students per class, number of classes
taught, types of items in the portfolio, type of self-evaluation, how you
manange the number of portfolios you have, where they are stored, etc.

Sorry this is so long, and TIA !!
Cathy Rae
