Netters: Sorry to be so long in replying to those of you who requested a hit in response to my question about handling teacher checkouts. I have a good excuse--lightning ran through my phone line and knocked out my computer. I am doing this from memory. What I remember is that everyone seems to have the problem of some teachers keeping books for long periods of time. Some librarians have checkout periods for teachers varying from one month to one semester. Others have no specific time. Suggestions for getting books turned in included posting lists in teachers' lounges, going to the principal for help, sending bills for books, speaking to teachers individually, and sending others requesting books directly to offending teacher. The most common method was frequent reminder notes. My conclusion? There is no definitive solution to this problem--just do what works for you. Thanks to all of you who took time to help me. As I have just learned that I will be full time K-8 library-media specialist next year, I'm sure I'll be back for more help and advice! Charles Hawkins Steelville R-3 Schools
