African/American reference resource?

Dear Colleagues:
I am trying to locate a good reference book (or set) of African Americans
(biographies) who have made contributions in the arts, science, education,
history, etc. for elementary grades.  Reading level should be comparable to
World Book or below.  Cost is not such an issue as is quality of entries.
 Something with photographs would be good.  Are there any suggestions out
