Hello fellow netters! I thought you might be interested in this activity. If you are unable to do it through the library, by all means pass it on to the teachers in your school. Lynn ---------------------------------------------------------- Lynn Bright Goliad Elementary School Librarian 3902 Goliad Street bright@tenet.edu San Angelo, TX 76904 "Reading is a window to the world!" ---------------------------------------------------------- ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Thu, 2 Nov 1995 12:11:43 -0600 From: Sarah W. Bednarz <s-bednarz@TAMU.EDU> To: Multiple recipients of list TAGE <TAGE@TAMVM1.TAMU.EDU> Subject: Carmen SanDiego Once again, Delta and WGBH in Boston are sponsoring a learning activity (don't think of it as a contest--it is a learning activity with better than usual awards.) The activity is aimed at students 9 to 13 years old. The mission: "Hunt through a newspaper for the name of a foreign city where you think the crooks could be hiding. Tell us how you traveled to this foreign city and caught the gang. But first, you must create a CITY-FILE with everything you need to know to crack the case...." The activities associated with the CITY-FILE creation represent good geography--identifying a geographic question, collecting data and organizing it.Students research their city under six headings: location, culture, environment, travel requirements, similarity/difference to the student's hometown, and anything else. Then, the student uses the CITY-FILE to write an ESSAY about the student's adventure as a special agent on assignment to catch the gang. 1000-1200 words for the 9-11 yr. olds, 1300-2000 words for the 12-13 yr.olds. The entire collection (like a portfolio, really) is then submitted. Judging is by geography professionals--several Texas TC's were judges last year-based on content, creativity, and clarity. The deadline is February 15. To get more information and an entry kit call 1-800-DELTA-18. I urge you all to do it! The number of entries--good entries--is an indicator of the support for geography education. Feel free to forward this to other lists and groups. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++OOOOO++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Sarah W.
