Thanks so much for all the wonderful suggestions - my students are going
to have a great time!! Appreciate all the help - I have some serious book
buying to do.

Here are the suggestions I received for a good, easy to read Thanksgiving
story for my 7th grade students:

For an well-written "Thanksgiving" story told from a different point of
view try The Guest by Michael Dorris. This is told from the Native American
viewpoint. It may help us see another way to celebrate and give thanks.

In the book _Soup and Me_ by Robert Newton Peck, "Turkey Trot" is a sure
fire winner!
                     - - - - - - -

Try the "Thanksgiving Treasure" by Gail Rock. I have read it to 5th
graders but feel that the story would also be appropriate for your age
group. It's a wonderful story done in the style of her "House without a
Christmas Tree."
                    - - - - - - -

Try "Molly's Pilgrim" by Barbara Cohen. Although it may appear to be too
young for them, I think the message is important for middle schoolers. We
are reading it aloud to our 6th grade classes this year.

Just a suggestion: the opening chapter of Earl Hamner's novel _Spencer's
Mountain_ makes a good Thanksgiving story.

Try "Two Thanksgiving Day Gentlemen" by O. Henry. It has a surprise
ending that most students enjoy.

Our Jr. high teacher always reads Who's that Stepping on Plymouth Rock?
by Jean Fritz.

How about Twas the Night before Thanksgiving by Dav Pilkey. A really funny
and cute picture book.

I've found that even though they may not admit it, my 7th graders love
having picture books read to them. One good T-day story is *How many Days
to America - A Thanksgiving Story* by Eve Bunting. It's a Caribbean boat
people story that parallels the pilgrim's T-day story.

How about "Stranded at Plymouth Plantation 1626". This is an exciting
story about Early American life in Massachusetts. It is written by Gary
Bower and reviewed in Booklist 1/15/94.

I have two to recommend. One you can sing. It's called "The Pilgrims are
coming" and you sing it to the tune of "When Johnny comes Marching Home."
It costs around 4.95 in paperback - forget the name of the author.

The second is called (I think) Dinner at the Tappleton's and I like it
because it talks more of the true meaning of Thanksgiving (being together
as a family) in a humorous way that many kids can relate to. Also cheap
and in paperback.

                    _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Three Young Pilgrims by Cheryl Harness
M.C.Wyeth's Pilgrims, text by Robert San Souci - this one is especially
interesting to older students because of the story behind the painting
and the information included in the end papers.

                    _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

Try the Thanksgiving Story by Louisa May Alcott...my students love it!

The First Thanksgiving by Jean Craighead George is excellent. It is
illustrated by Thomas Locker. A little different coverage of the old story.
