Sounds like Philip and the others who wrote on this subject have had a good
experience. I agree.

At a K-5 school where I once worked, the principal suggested a Summer
check-out.  Students who got a parent's signature could check out books for
the whole summer.  This worked very well.  The return rate was nearly
perfect (those not returned were paid for).

The parental approval form specified whether the child could check out hard
cover books or be limited to paperbacks.  It was thrilling for some children
to know they could have cherished books for the whole summer. The program
was not open to fifth graders, who would go to middle school in the fall.
