Jane: The media center I am in was built 4 years ago, and there are a
couple of features I appreciate. Conduit was installed in the ceilings
from the media center to every classroom, so we are ready for networking
when the funds are available (we already are wired to network television).
We also have a dedicated phone line for online services, which is a lot
easier to get at the time that the other lines are being installed in
the building. I wish that our center had been located adjacent to the
computer lab, so that we could share software, etc. Plenty of storage
goes without saying; I have four storerooms (periodicals, AV, workroom
with sink, copyroom/secretary's office) besides my office space
(which often looks like a storeroom!) We do have a copy machine, which
is nice. We have space for two classes at a time, separated by the stacks.
I had AV screens installed in each
area, so that I can use overheads in my instruction. I also had tack
strips installed around these areas, so we can hang posters, etc.
without marring the walls. My biggest wish is, I WISH I HAD
WINDOWS!!! We're centrally located in the building, which is wonderful,
but I never see the outdoors from the time I enter the building at 7 a.m.
I REALLY miss the sun.
Good luck with your planning!
