It's been awhile since I posted this, so you may have thought it died out. The kids are still running to Atlanta (simulated run). We experienced a lot of inclement weather (NOT simulated!), so progress has been slower than expected (they're only to Shreveport). I suggested to the coach that if they run out of time at the end of the school year, they could always make a call to the "Cyber Schoolbus" to come take them the rest of the way. Thanks to all who have responded so far. We have heard from Peggy Rowan in Royse City, TX, Joyce Bryan in Mt. Pleasant, SC, Madeline Buchana in Birmingham, Rhonda Idle in Connecticut, Brenda Moxley in Birmingham, Tony Pope in Rome, GA, Mary Alice Clinton in Crossett, Arkansas. They all shared ideas and local recipes, and our kids have learned much. If you live along IH20 from Dallas to Atlanta, GA, and would care to write back, we would still like to hear from you as we make our "way" to Altanta, the site of the Summer Olympics. I have not heard from anyone yet. Also, I meant to say "Birmingham" in the 2nd paragraph! :-) ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Thu, 4 Jan 1996 11:54:02 -0600 From: Wade Houston Weiler <wadew@tenet.edu> To: Multiple recipients of list LM_NET <LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU> Subject: GREET/ELEM: Olympic Site At W.T. Hanes, our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are doing a project in PE that is related to the 1996 Summer Olympics. These students are looking for "REST STOPS" along the way to Atlanta, GA from Dallas, TX. (We're actually in Irving.) They are "simulating" running from Dallas to the site of the upcoming Summer Olympics. They are actually running here at our school and adding up their mileages until the total equals the actual distance from Dallas to Atlanta (about 816 mi., I think) If you live in any of the towns along IH 20 (between Dallas and Atlanta) and would like to correspond with our students, please respond to my e-mail address (wadew@tenet.edu) and participate in our survey. Some of the towns along the way include: Tyler, Shreveport, Bossier City, Monroe, Vicksburg, Jackson, Tuscaloosa, Brimingham, and, of course, Atlanta. Also, we would LOVE to hear from any of the smaller towns along the route. When you write back, please answer the following questions: 1. Your name? 2. Are you a student or teacher? (What grade if you answer "student") 3. Your school's name? 4. Local recipes (We'll be hungry when we get there!) 5. Local historical sights to see. 6. Where do the kids (elem) like to hang out? 7. Anything else you'd like to share with us. Students and/or teachers are invited to particpate. We'll be doing this unit in about two weeks (January 15). Thanks, Wade Weiler
