On the good days it looks like a tornado! =8^O
Seriously, I let all kids pick out their own books. I also try to get 5-6
grade helpers to come help the kids pick out and read books with them. It
only takes a couple of big kids per class.

My assistant and I watch for 'inapropriate' books. Usually it is just
that they are looking for the thickest or biggest one they can find.

I also have 3-4 and sometimes 2nd grade helpers who come in and
straighten shelves (keep things in a state of controlled chaos, beats
entropy). keep it within their ability and keep it fun...

I am planning (starting to design) a bookmark that says 'Help me read
this book' as a hint to the parental unit...
