Jan and friends,
        Even though we are automated at all libraries in our district
(making inventory and statistical reports much easier), all librarians are
given a 10 month contract...thus it is no problem to be open from the first
day to the last. On the first day of class I checked out 118 books and other
materials (enrollment about 350). Although I quit checking out 2-week books
3 weeks before the last day, I am still open for students to do research,
use computers, leisure reading, etc.
        If you don't have an extended contract and are expected to be open
from the first day until the last day, someone is *really* taking unfair
advantage of you--especially if you are also the AV/Internet/Computer
coordinator as some are!!!
