come to be handed down through the years." includes epics,
ballads, legends, folk songs, myths and fables,
legends a long narrative or cycle stories clusttering around the
actions of a single hero,
fables are brief didactic tales in which animals speak as human
beings; represent. different aspects of human nature and are
primary to instruct, so include a moral.

fairytales:  From my readings and storytelling classes the term
fairy tales is an alternative term for the folktales that have
fairies in them
