The thing you were told to do the first time was probably to "zap" the memory, which I was told reinstalls the factory presets on your Mac. Hold down 4 keys: the apple, option, P, & R at one time while booting up the computer. Keep holding them down for 5 tones, which should take about 2 minutes, then release. Wait for the "rebuild desktop?" message, & click OK.
