Our school is completely multiage-K-2, 3-5 and the classes are changed
around by ability for math and reading-so kids are more with their
academic peers than their age peers. It seems to be working very well. In
addition the students stay with their taechers for 3 years and the
teachers team (3 per) so they change around the 3 classes for language
arts and math. In other elem.'s in our district-mixed age classes are
growing in popularity. My daughter has been in mixed classes for most of
her time and it has been successful because in schools that have both
they put the more independent learners in the mixed classes. the 4 -5
classes are a little more difficult for the teachers because the
curriculum is a little more inflexible, but she was in 5 in a 4-5 and the
teacher used literature based teaching with great ingenuity.
