In response to Stephen Collins' comment (Feb 23) about Vegemite I
would like to set the record straight. :-)

Vegemite (manufactured by Kraft) is a black spread that children in
Australia are brought up on ( rather like the British Marmite). It is
eaten, spread thinly, on toast at breakfast, as a sandwich filling
and is a great snack on savoury crackers. No one else in the world
(as Stephen indicated) seems to like it and it causes great amusement
to try it out on others.

Australians are known (myself included) to take a jar of vegemite
with them when travelling - perhaps it has addictive qualities!! It
is actually rich in Vitamin B.

I have seen it on sale in America in speciality Australian shops
which you find occasionally in shopping malls. When skiing in Aspen
one year we stay in a small hotel frequented by Australians. The
owners had thoughtfully provided a can (caterers size, I think) of
Vegemite and someone lacking in gourmet taste had written on the
lid: "Axel grease. Warning: Dilute 50 to 1" !!

Regards to all, Jenny.

PS It's not at all like peanut butter, which is also a popular spread
over here - but not served with jelly!!
