As a former ranger in the National Park Service, I used to sell the materials -- books, videos, cassette tapes, posters, clothing, etc. -- visitors encounter in a visitor's center or park headquarters. In one instance, at Isle Royale National Park located up in Lake Superior, some of the materials were actually property of the Isle Royale Historical Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the exposure and knowledge of all parks, especially Isle Royale; for example, if you were a member of the Yosemite Association, you would receive the same discount on materials at Isle Royale as members of the Isle Royale Historical Society. Anyone interested in information concerning the publications sold in a particular National Park need only to write or phone said Park and make a request. Or, you can join one organization and get their catalog while you're helping to support their educational and preservational endeavors, combining the membership with discounts on materials (as a previous Park employee, I still receive regular mailings from the Isle Royale Historical Society).
