Comrades: Actually, Cinco de Mayo celebrates the "2nd independence" of Mexico. This commemorates the victory of the forces of Benito Juarez over those of Maximilian. The actual Mexican Independence Day is September 16, which commemorates Mexican freedom from Spain. (I only know this because I used to be librarian at Benito Juarez H.S. in (where else?)
