The explanation I've heard involves the medieval use of stocks for
punishment, binding the perpetrator of a crime in the public square as a
target for abuse and rotten vegetation.  Above his/her head was written
the crime.  In this case, the 4-letter word supposedly comes from the
crime of "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge."
