GEN: TECH HELP

I am considering replacing my home computer  and giving mine to my
daughter.  I need some advice.  In view of the larger size hard drives
most people are buying and I need now (1.5-2.0 g.), what are people doing
about backups?  I insist on making frequent backups of the hard drive, even
though I save some data that changes frequently on floppies.  Are zip
drives the way to go?  Are they preferable to tape backup systems?  Are
zip drives always external?
Any help is appreciated.
